When luxury decided that sneakers were worth their weight in gold

Ten years ago, mentioning an eight hundred euro sneaker at a Pitti Uomo show would have triggered nervous laughter. Today, it is a reality that is displayed without complexes on the Parisian and Milanese catwalks. Margiela, Balenciaga, Loewe: luxury giants have methodically transformed the sneaker into a premium object of desire, relegating three-stripes and swooshes to the rank of relics of democratic streetwear.

The shift has taken place gradually since Demna Gvasalia took the reins of Balenciaga in 2015. By transforming trivial silhouettes into quasi-architectural urban sculptures, he gave the sneaker its letters of nobility. Martin Margiela, in the 1990s in Antwerp, had guessed it: deconstructing the sneaker meant reconstructing it as a transgenerational object. Collaborations with Supreme and other streetwear players were only meant to validate what we already knew – that sneakers had become the universal language of contemporary cool.

This repositioning responds to an implacable economic logic. While sales of handbags plateau, sneakers offer incomparable margins and an almost infinite capacity for innovation. On Running, this Swiss champion often forgotten in luxury narratives, understood this by partnering with Loewe to offer refined, geometric silhouettes, which dialogue with haute couture rather than imitating it. It's this subtlety that justifies the price - not the lack of compromise, but rather a clearly stated ambition.

The nagging question remains: has the eight hundred euro sneaker really changed in nature, or have we simply renamed the accessory? Tokyo, Brooklyn, London: the capitals of sneaker culture are observing this mutation with a mixture of fascination and skepticism. These styles are available at MNR Sneakers, where the selection embraces this philosophy of recalibrated luxury – less quantity, more intention.

The irony is that this democratization of luxury via sneakers paradoxically creates a new elite: that of informed collectors, fashion editors, curators who know how to read the secret code printed on each sole. Basketball has never been more democratic or more elitist at the same time. This is the big game of 2024.
